Highlights of the data
Individual income tax withheld and tax payments, combined, totaled $2.9 trillion before refunds (Tables 1-1 XLSX and 1-6 XLSX ).
The IRS also collected $486.4billion in income taxes, before refunds, from businesses in FY 2025 (Tables 1-1 XLSX and 1-6 XLSX).
More than 224.2 million returns and other forms were filed electronically. These represented 82.6% of all filings. For individual tax returns, 93.7% were filed electronically (Table 1-4 XLSX ).
The IRS issued 116.9 million refunds to individuals in FY 2025, amounting to $516.4 billion (Tables 1-7 XLSX and 1-8 XLSX XLSX ).
In FY 2025, 14.0 million tax refunds included a refundable child tax credit and 22.2 million included a refundable earned income tax credit (Table 1-7 XLSX ).
