SOI Tax Stats - IRS Data Book


The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Data Book is published annually by the IRS and contains statistical tables and organizational information on a fiscal year basis. The report provides data on collecting the revenue, issuing refunds, enforcing the law, assisting the taxpayer, and the budget and workforce.

Graphic shows gross collections by type of tax for fiscal years 2014 through 2023. Total gross collections were relatively steady from 2014 through 2020, then increased sharply in fiscal years 2021 and 2022, before declining slightly in fiscal year 2023. In fiscal year 2023, gross collections decreased in the business income and individual income categories, while increasing slightly in the category containing employment, estate and gift, and excise taxes.

Highlights of this year's Data Book

  • During Fiscal Year (FY) 2023, the IRS collected nearly $4.7 trillion in gross taxes, processed almost 271.5 million tax returns and other forms, and issued about $659.1 billion in tax refunds.
  • In FY 2023, nearly 60.3 million taxpayers were assisted by calling or visiting an IRS office.
  • received more than 880.9 million visits and taxpayers downloaded about 538.1 million files.
  • In FY 2023, the IRS closed 582,944 tax return audits, resulting in $31.9 billion in recommended additional tax.
