Fix a rejected Free File Fillable Forms return

A rejected return is not filed. A rejection happens after the return was transmitted and the IRS returned one or more errors.

  1. Open the most recent rejection email or Step 5 rejection data.
  2. Copy the complete rejection text, including the 20-digit Submission ID and every error.
  3. Paste the complete text into the Error Search Toolbox. Do not summarize or delete part of the message.
  4. Apply every solution, review the return and resubmit it.
Body

From the rejection email, copy the complete message from the greeting through the final automated-system statement.

From Step 5, copy all rejection information below the instruction to use the IRS Error Search Tool.

Include the 20-digit Submission ID and every rejection issue. The results appear in the order entered.

Search the complete message and correct every result. Fixing only the first error may cause the return to reject again.

Review the return, forms and payment information before you resubmit.

  1. Confirm that you used the most recent rejection message.
  2. Copy the complete text again, including the Submission ID and all errors.
  3. Do not add an explanation before or after the rejection text.
  4. Search again.

If no result appears after you follow the instructions, contact rejection support with the latest complete rejection message.

Apply the solution before you contact support. If the return rejects again with the same error, send the complete most recent rejection message, the 20-digit Submission ID, the solution you applied.

If no result appears after you follow the instructions, contact rejection support with the latest complete rejection message.

Do not send a Social Security number, ITIN, physical address, password, bank information, card information or a copy of the full tax return.

Send only the information requested for the technical issue.

Follow the approved filing-season alert for the final date to retransmit a rejected return. Correct and resubmit as soon as possible.

Save or print the return before the final account-access date.
