IRS Statement — Child Tax Credit for families in Puerto Rico

April 18, 2022

This year marks the first time in history that many families with children in Puerto Rico will be eligible to claim the Child Tax Credit, which has been expanded to provide up to $3,600 per child. The IRS has been deeply engaged in local efforts to promote access to the Child Tax Credit in Puerto Rico, and we have been privileged to work with a broad range of community organizations who have worked tirelessly to provide this critical support to families across the island.

As we continue this work, we want to make clear that families in Puerto Rico can continue to claim the Child Tax Credit after today's filing deadline. In fact, families who don't owe taxes to the IRS can file their 2021 tax return and claim the Child Tax Credit for the 2021 tax year at any point until April 15, 2025 without any penalty. Our efforts to enroll families in the Child Tax Credit are therefore continuing in the months ahead. As with any new program, we are responding to implementation issues as they arise, and we will continue to do so as we work to make sure that every eligible resident of Puerto Rico is able to access this benefit.
