Sole Proprietorship Returns, Tax Year 2017PDF

For Tax Year 2017, taxpayers reported nonfarm sole proprietorship activity on approximately 26.4 million individual income tax returns, a 3.5-percent increase from Tax Year 2016. Total nonfarm sole proprietorship profits grew 5.5 percent to $346.2 billion in 2017. In constant dollars, total profits also increased by 3.5 percent. As a percentage of business receipts, total profits decreased slightly to 22.6 percent, down from 23.1 percent in the prior year. The professional, scientific, and technical services sector remained the sector with the largest share of profits at 23.9 percent, increasing 6.6 percent to $82.8 billion. Most sectors’ profits rose, with the largest percentage increase in the administrative and support and waste management services sector, up 14.7 percent to $24.4 billion.
