What to Expect When You Pay Cash at an IRS Office

If you need to pay with cash in person at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC), use this step-by-step guide to prepare for the visit and help ensure a safe, secure and efficient process.

We also offer other cash payment methods.

Get ready

  • Call to schedule your appointment 30 to 60 days in advance of the day you want to pay. We can only schedule appointments within 60 days of your call.
    • IRS TAC operations may be limited due to the COVID-19 crisis or other administrative issues. When you call, we can provide you with the most up-to-date details.
  • Estimate how much you'll pay, the number and denominations of U.S. bills, the tax period(s) you want to pay for, and the type(s) of taxes you want to pay (e.g., income taxes for 2019). This helps us determine how much time your appointment will take and how our staff can best serve you.
  • Determine who'll represent your business, if not you. A representative will need a Power of Attorney — if we don't already have it on file — to receive the receipt. Otherwise we’ll send it in the mail.

Give us a call

  • Call us at 844-545-5640.
    • This toll-free line is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time (Hawaii and Alaska follow Pacific Time Zone).
  • Appointments are usually 1-2 hours depending on the amount of cash you bring, the number of tax periods you want to pay for, and the number of tax types you need to pay.
  • We'll work with you to find a time and place that works for you. Not all IRS TACs can accept cash.

Gather your materials

  • If you're paying more than $10,000, expect a call from us to confirm the date, time, duration and location, and other information to help your appointment be as efficient as possible.  Ask how early you should plan to arrive to consider traffic, parking and security.
  • Gather your paperwork (government-issued identification; Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number; and Power of Attorney, if needed).
  • Bundle your cash in the highest dominations possible.

Come visit

  • We'll escort you to a secure location.
  • We'll ask for paperwork and the tax type(s) and period(s) you want to pay for.
  • We'll count your cash with you and issue a receipt.

Before you leave

  • If you need another appointment within the next 60 days, ask us about setting it up so you don't have to call again.
  • Fill out the survey at the IRS TAC to let us know how we can improve the process.
