As an economist with SOI, you’ll plan and conduct studies using tax and information returns as primary data sources. You’ll also meet and work with our customers, other SOI staff, and IRS field personnel. It’s a challenging job and you’ll need to continually review economic, statistical, and tax literature to maintain your expertise, respond to public inquiries, present papers, and train personnel. You’ll work with either the Individual, Corporation, or Special Studies Branches of SOI.

IT Professionals

We need specialists in both applications and technical support.

Application specialists

Here, you’ll work in the operations sections in one of the three subject-matter Branches of SOI where you’ll perform systems analysis and design, write and code programs, and test, monitor, and maintain the applications. You’ll design and work with relational databases and interactive data entry programs to create statistical microdata files for delivery to SOI customers.

Tech support specialists

As part of the team, you’ll be responsible for our computer hardware, its operating systems and commercial software, and data communications systems. You’ll also manage the LAN and various components of the WAN and provide expertise on systems and database administration, data communications, and software languages.

Mathematical Statisticians

We have two teams of mathematical statisticians supporting SOI programs and providing consulting to other areas of the IRS.

Mathematical Statistics Section

In the Mathematical Statistics Section, you’ll manage our sampling operations, provide statistical guidance and expertise, ensure the integrity of our data, and prepare technical papers for professional meetings.

Statistical Support Section

In the Statistical Support Section, you will be one of our resident consultants to other IRS organizations. You’ll design samples, develop weighting specifications, quality measures, and customer satisfaction surveys, determine appropriate estimation and variance parameters for study variables and assist with cognitive research.

Candidate Qualifications

At SOI, we’re proud of what we do and work hard to produce the best, most reliable statistical information on the state of our tax operations. We expect you to be the best as well. To join us, you’ll need:

  • United States citizenship
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher on all undergraduate course work or for all courses taken during the last two years of the curriculum, or
  • Standing in the upper third of the college or university graduating class, or
  • Membership in a recognized national scholastic honor society.

Specific Course Requirements

  • Economists need 21 semester hours in economics and 3 hours in accounting, statistics or calculus
  • IT Specialists must have majored in computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, operations research or engineering or had course work that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems and provided knowledge equivalent to a computer major.
  • Mathematical Statisticians need 21 semester hours in mathematics and statistics, at least 12 hours of which must be in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics.
