IRS VITA Grant Program

Information about the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) grant program, how to apply, locating volunteer opportunities or sites in your local area or if your organization received notice of a grant award can be found below. In addition, the current grant recipients listing is also included. The VITA grant program is an IRS initiative designed to support free tax preparation service for the underserved through various partner organizations. This service helps low-to-moderate income  individuals, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and limited English speakers file their taxes each year. IRS awards matching funds to these support organizations that offer free tax preparation services during the tax filing season at locations in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The current list of VITA and TCE grant recipients PDF allow IRS partner organizations to:

  • Increase VITA services to the underserved across the country;
  • Increase the number of returns filed electronically;
  • Enhance volunteer training; and
  • Significantly improve the accuracy of returns prepared at volunteer sites.
  • VITA Grant partners use grant funds to help grow their VITA programs in various ways, including:
    • Hiring dedicated staff that focus on building relationships with community partners, recruiting volunteers and retaining volunteers.
    • Designing and printing posters, customizable flyers, and postcards with information about both the VITA volunteer opportunity and tax preparation services.

    • Administering VITA sites, including general operating costs like purchasing laptops and office supplies.
